Many
organisations are now enormously dependent on their IT systems
to hold and protect their data, yet all too often they give
insufficient consideration to how vulnerable that data may be.
Protronics will provide pragmatic advice on how to ensure you
adequately protect your data. While we can provide appropriate
IT infrastructure, we believe that you should also have company
procedures that enable you to validate that your data is being
protected. Key areas include:
Anti-virus protection
Viruses are a major and increasing threat to corporate networks.
It is vital that systems are in place to ensure that you have
the latest anti-virus protection, and that these systems are
regularly validated. Anti-virus software is itself intrusive
and potentially problematic, but the alternative of not deploying
it regularly results in major network failure.
Backups
These are vital and, in principle, simple. However, incorrect
configuration is surprisingly common and backup technology surprisingly
vulnerable to failure. We will implement systems that provide
you with reports and alerts if there are problems, but we will
also remind you that you cannot be sure that you have successfully
backed up your critical data unless you have demonstrated that
you can restore it.
Internet
security
It is not just defence establishments and banks that are targeted
by hackers. There is software available on the Internet that
allows people to automatically scan the Internet for vulnerable
systems. If you are connected to the Internet, you are almost
certainly being probed by such software on a regular basis.
You should have appropriate protection, and you should test
it regularly.
